How to Run a Background Check on Yourself
July 20, 2020How to run a background check on yourself.
Military discharge upgrades and records corrections often have a higher chance of success if accompanied by a background check. A clean background check demonstrates that a Veteran has been a productive citizen, stayed out of trouble, and that their misconduct in service was a one-off. While there are numerous companies that offer background checks, it is best to have the FBI conduct one. For a small fee of 18 dollars, the FBI will do one. In addition to filling out an application, the Veteran will have to go to a participating post-office for fingerprints.

In addition to providing a quality background check, Veterans applying for a discharge upgrade or records correction have a higher chance of success if they hire a lawyer to put together their application. Often times, legal error was committed in their separation from the Service. It is best to have a lawyer review a Veteran's record for error. Finally, written advocacy is a skill, and lawyers are trained to put together comprehensive, well-organized, and effective arguments.
